The people behind an order

Between a specification and a bag on a doorstep stand a handful of roles, and what follows is what each one actually decides.

Product

Product decides the two numbers that define a pillow: how much fill goes into a shell of a given size, and how tall the gusset is. Everything a person feels on the first night comes out of those two decisions, and neither of them is visible in a photograph.

The harder half of the job is deciding how many support levels to make. One is not enough, because a side sleeper and a front sleeper want opposite things. Six is too many, because nobody can tell four of them apart from a description.

Materials

Materials owns the fibre and the shell, and the certifications that go with them. That means keeping the OEKO-TEX certificate current, which is an annual exercise rather than a one time badge, and it means knowing that a change of fibre supplier changes how a pillow feels even when the specification on paper is identical.

Quality control

Quality control is the role that says no to a batch. On a pillow the checklist is short and unglamorous: seams that hold under the load of compression packing, fill weight within tolerance across a run, a gusset stitched square, and a shell with no loose thread at the piping.

The most valuable thing this role catches is not a torn seam. It is a batch that is five per cent light on fill, which nobody notices in the factory and everybody notices in month three.

Packing

Packing decides the first impression, and on a vacuum sealed product that impression is misleading by design. A pillow compressed to a quarter of its size takes about a day to come back, and a person who unpacks one and sleeps on it that same hour is judging something they have not received yet. That is why the instruction to leave it out is on the pack and on every product page here.

Support

Support answers the question that actually gets asked, which is almost never about the whole product. It is about one size, one measurement that does not match a tape, one pillowcase that will not go on. Most of this job is working out which size somebody actually has.
